Panaway for Pain and Bruising

A friend of mine, and previous driving partner on the dog runs, had a story to relate about using Panaway after a tumble from a horse. This is her story in brief;

Elena and Bug
I was jumping through a gymnastic grid. Pony zigged, I zagged and hit the ground (which was incredibly hard with the recent drought). I landed on my left side. I have to believe that I bounced a few times to have as much bruising as I did (and in so many places). I was bruised pretty much from the middle of my abdomen to the small of my back. The area that seemed to have taken the brunt of the impact was my left hip (which is the area that has remained numb). I have to say, the arnica really helped with the bruising (which went down in about two weeks - which sounds like a long time, but again it was impressive). I added the Panaway about 1/2 way through the second week after Dachia reminded me about it.

I used the entire small bottle of the Panaway and started to feel an improvement, but ran out and didn't place a new order for a bit. In the weeks between running out and remembering to start using it again, the pain started coming back and was worsening.

In the two days I have been back on it, I haven't had to take Advil once.

Peppermint Oil as Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Killer

A couple mornings ago, I woke with a very sore shoulder. I was sleeping in a strained position and when I tried to move out if it, I realized my pain. So, assuming it was the position, I figured the pain would go away as I started to move around. It didn't.

That afternoon, I applied Panaway and Valor and didn't feel a change. I used the red-light.... no change. I went to bed and tried to be still... yeah right. I did not sleep well and my movements, whether unconscious or not woke me quickly.

The next morning I was still in pain. I should say that I actually have a high pain threshold and tolerance, so I knew I really hurt. That afternoon,  I sought the advice of Carol Koltz, of Waterhorse Essentials. She felt my shoulder and neck, said I had a vertebra or two slightly out, I should get an adjustment, suggested Peppermint oil and lent me her Ma Roller.

I hobbled home, put peppermint oil all over the area and within minutes felt better. I laid down on the floor and used the roller for a couple minutes.   A few hours later, I used the oil again and did some stretching in a doorway. The oil almost immediately made a difference again. I strolled back to Carol's place and asked her to feel my neck again and she said it was much better. I asked her to apply oil where I couldn't reach easily and told her how great this stuff is. She said Peppermint oil is anti-inflammatory and a pain-killer.

I applied more oil just before bed, used the red-light a little and slept much better. This morning, I can still feel it, but not nearly as bad as it had been. I applied more peppermint, and felt much better again.

The key here was to find a way to feel well-enough so that I could stretch the area. Without the oil, it was far too painful to stretch. With the oil, I think I am able to use the body to help repair itself.

This is one of my favorite  oils now. I use it in the horse's water tanks to help keep them cool and I suggest it to friends with headaches or fevers.

Using Purifcation as an Air Freshener... and stink killer

My good friend and neighbor recently told me this story and I asked her to write it down for me to share with you (her story in her words follows):
I would like to share a story with you about how Purification essential oil changed my whole day!
One morning, after going into the closet for some clothes, my husband noticed a "strange" odor, somewhat subtle, but all the same, "strange".  I, also, noticed it, but thinking to myself, until I had a chance to investigate further, would put out an over-the-counter air freshener.
The next morning, again my husband said I should really investigate where the odor was coming from, because it was much stronger and he was concerned about the clothes being in there.  I noticed this as well, and started looking around a bit, but didn't really have the time that day to get to cleaning out the whole closet.

On the third day, the odor was so putrid, I knew that the ONLY thing I could do at that very moment was to starting taking everything out and investigate what it was.  As I went back and forth cleaning everything out, I couldn't catch a normal breath of air and ran as fast as I could towards the bathroom.  I had noticed my small dog go running out of the closet after me and he followed me to the bathroom.  When I looked down, I noticed that he had a disemboweled mouse in his mouth!  I reached for him, and he, of course, went running through the house with this poor thing, dragging it on the floor as he went!

By the time that adventure was over, the house smelled rancid and until we could address the deep cleaning, I put a few drops of Purification (quite a few actually) in my diffuser and within no time at all, the house became a place that you could actually breathe in again and smile.

Sometimes the unexpected happens, and I know that without having this particular essential oil on hand, it would have been a total nightmare!

Peace & Calming... a revisit

I think I told you about this before, but we use a few Essential Oils on our Rescue Dog Transport.  Briefly, we pick up dogs from local shelters, kennels and fosters and drive them to their new homes or the next step in finding their new (forever) homes in the NorthEast.  When I first began doing this job, the van was a loud, obnoxious, dramatic box on wheels. It smelled terrible and it was nearly impossible for the passenger to get some sleep, and be ready to drive again in a few hours.

I had received a box of different Young Living Essential Oils from my sister over the Christmas holiday the year before, and it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps the oils could be used with the dogs.  The next transport, I arrived armed with a few oils and some ideas.  I put a drop of Peace and Calming, an oil blend, on each pad in each kennel.  I also used Valor on a couple pads that were to be used by dogs that were very worried and somewhat withdrawn.  As the transports progressed, we have tried different oils in different situations, but basically the oils made a huge difference in the overall transport.  The van smelled nicer, the dogs were quieter and seemed much more relaxed.

I have since created a spray that uses Peace & Calming and Purification and a couple other oils, with water, that we use to freshen up the van or to freshen up the effect on a particular dog.  I cannot begin to emphasize how much of a difference we have seen on transport.  Several of our regular drop-off people have made comments about how great the van smells and how relaxed the dogs seem.  An added bonus is that the smell is not a chemical man-made, synthetic fragrance that is annoying to a dog (whose sense of smell is FAR better than ours).  This is a natural, enjoyable smell that they seem to enjoy and appreciate.
A couple dogs hitching a ride to their new homes.

We had decided on the first run that we used the oils that if it helped just one dog become more relaxed and arrive in a little better health (mentally and physically) than he would have without it, it was worth the effort.  We achieved far greater success than simply one dog benefiting.  I encourage you to check out other testimonials concerning these oils or any others.  I have lots of links for lots of oils and uses, let me know what you are looking for.

Suggested Essential Oils- First Aid Kit for Animals

The following is taken directly from the Essential Oils Desk Reference.  When I come across something that I think others can benefit from, I'll put it here.  I have horses and dogs and spend a great deal of time with horses and dogs (not necessarily mine).  What I really like about this is that I can create one first aid kit for all of us.  My horses and dogs and I can all use the same stuff.
  • Animal Scents Ointment to seal and disinfect open wounds.
  • Exodus II for infection, inflammation; to promote tissue regeneration.
  • Helichrysum as a topical anesthetic.
  • Idaho Tansy is one of the most versatile oils for animals.  It is purifying, cleansing, tissue-regenerating, anti-inflammatory, and anesthetic, and is used for bruised bones, cuts, wounds, and colic. It repels flies.
  • Laurel for bruising and soreness.
  • Lavender for tissue regeneration, desensitizing wound.
  • Melrose for disinfecting and cleaning wounds.
  • Mountain Savory for reducing inflammation.
  • Myrrh for infection, inflammation; to promote tissue regeneration.
  • Ortho Ease to dilute essential oils and act as a pain-reliever and anti-inflammatory.
  • PanAway: If the pain originates from a broken bone rather than an open wound, use PanAway to kill pain in points where there is no open, raw tissue.  Note: Do not apply PanAway to open wounds because it will sting and traumatize the animal.  Instead use helichrysum and balsam fir to reduce bleeding and pain.
  • Purification is more effective than using iodine or hydrogen peroxide for washing and cleansing wounds. It repels ticks and mites.
  • Roman Chamomile for tissue regeneration, desensitizing wound.
  • Thieves for inflammation, infection and bacteria; for proudflesh (where new tissue continues to rebuild itself causing excessive granulation) to promote tissue regeneration.
  • Valerian can be used internally and externally for controlling pain.
  • Vetiver can be used internally and externally for controlling pain.

    Using Essential Oils- Internal Consumption

The following information is taken directly from the Young Living website.

    Using Essential Oils

The following how-to-use essential oils guide will show you how to experience their health-enhancing benefits:

    Internal Consumption

Many essential oils make excellent food flavorings or dietary supplements. To use essential oils for internal consumption, Young Living suggests these methods:
    1. Place several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow the capsule with water.
    2. Add 1–2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk.
    3. Put 1–2 drops onto a piece of bread or add to your meals when cooking.
    4. Add 1–2 drops onto a teaspoon of Young Living Blue Agave and swallow.
    5. Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. Exercise extreme caution when using this method. Many essential oils are potent and should be tested by pouring a single drop onto a spoon and tasting a small portion to determine the amount of oil to be used.

    Idaho Tansy

Straight from Essential Oils Desk Reference-

Idaho Tansy is one of the most versatile oils for animals. It is purifying, cleansing, tissue-regenerating, anti-inflammatory, and anesthetic, and is used for bruised bones, cuts, wounds, and colic. It repels flies.

I'm looking into how to best use it and what to use it with.  I always need bug repellents for my horses and for me.  We rarely have colic issues here, even with an average of 20 horses on the farm, but if we do, I want this stuff on hand.
